While trying for ten months to find a public school that could
accommodate a 15-year-old boy with severe physical and intellectual
limitations and a self-mutilation problem, as mandated by federal law,
the Commonwealth of Massachusetts paid for him to stay, without
schooling, at Boston's prestigious Children's Hospital.
The bill came to $619,000, which would pay the annual salaries of a
dozen teachers.
