The Des Moines Register
reports that a candidate for the city's school board—40 year
teaching veteran Jim Patch—believes students shouldn't have to be
able to read to get a high school diploma, since to do so would
discriminate against dyslexics. "I would like to see us be
accountable, but as far as tying graduation to reading, we're going to
have a lot of architects and artists and doctors out there who aren't
going to graduate from high school if we do that," he said.
