As a way of grappling with the deeply ingrained Western ideal of
female passivity, "Paula," a member of the Mohawk Nation who serves
as an "anti-bias training facilitator," made use of dog and teddy
bear surrogate puppets for the far more assertive and unwelcome task
of directing foot traffic at the 1992
National Women's Studies Association Conference
in Austin, Texas. "Teddy and his friend say
it's time to go back inside," one attendee quoted her as saying.
