An Inclusive Litany

After changing its name in 1973 from the American Association on
Mental Deficiency, the American Association on Mental Retardation
has now voted to change its name to avoid using the word "retarded."
Still, members of the organization were unable to agree on a
nonpejorative alternative. The American Psychological Association's
panel on Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities is also set
to change its name. Many psychologists prefer the term "intellectual
disability," but some object to the word "disability."
