The National Endowment for the Arts granted $31,500 to Cheryl Dunye
for her film The Watermelon Woman because it "attempts to
point out the lack of information about black women in history." The
film boasts the "hottest dyke sex scene ever recorded on celluloid,"
and co-stars Brian Freeman of the Porno Afro Homos performance troupe.
Dunye commented that she thought the NEA liked "the way I was making
up my own history to make up for a lack of history."
