After NYNEX phased in a computerized voice recognition system as part
of its directory assistance service, a dee-jay at Boston's WFNX radio
station ("morning-guy Ty") exhorted listeners to bark meaningless
syllables when dialing for information, which would confuse the
computer and force a live operator to pick up the line—thus sparing
jobs that would otherwise be lost to automation.
