An Associated Press item that appeared in the "National Briefing" section of the
New York Times, February 7, 2002:
The Los Angeles school district has halted distribution of a book
about the Koran because its foreword calls Jews illiterates who reject knowledge.
Nearly 300 copies of the book, "The Meaning of the Holy Quran,"
donated by the Omar Ibn Al Khattab Foundation, were removed on Tuesday
for further review. "We're going to talk to the foundation members
and determine exactly why the commentary's there and whether there is
research to support it," said Jim Konantz, a district official.
