Writing in Salon, Amy Halloran reports on a paper, delivered
at a book conference by Peggy Kamuf of the University of Southern California,
claiming that reading aloud to children is a violent act, initiating
them into the patriarchal construct of the family unit and society at
large. According to Kamuf, this initiation is so brutal and painful
that most people don't even remember learning to read.
