The Kentucky Commission on Women rejected South Central Bell's plan to
gradually phase out discriminatory "Men Working" signs, insisting
instead that there be immediate and remedial change. Furthermore, even if
the telephone company decided to abandon written signs in favor of a
symbol of a person working, the commission would still object. Kentucky
Transportation Cabinet spokeswoman Laura White declared that the symbol
would be gender-biased because "it looks like it has pants on," a
statement that is itself biased.
