An Inclusive Litany
6/21/93
U.C. Santa Cruz student Kanya Dorland has protested campus bathroom
signs, saying that they perpetuate sexist stereotypes by showing a
"petite, passive woman in a dress, and an aggressive, broad-shouldered
man in pants." If the university does not change the signs, Dorland
suggests that the women of U.C.S.C. "empower themselves" by tearing
them off the doors. This caused quite a stir with the administration,
as each of the signs cost $15 to produce, and with 400 bathrooms on
campus, this would ring up quite a bill. No word on whether any work
is being done to come up with an alternative set of universal symbols
to differentiate men and women.
