A special note appended to the course description for "Introduction to
Feminism," taught by Bettina Aptheker at the University of California
at Santa Cruz:
Many people who attend the University or work at it are seriously
impaired by Environmental Illness. The large numbers of pollutants,
chemicals, sprays, perfumes, soaps, carcinogenic agents, etc., affect
immune systems to such a degree that many are unable to function.
Severe congestion, headaches, fatigue and blackouts are frequent
problems. In classrooms such as ours, with no windows and only back
doors through which fresh air can circulate... minimizing the use of
strongly scented soaps, perfumes, etc., really helps."
