From
Earth in the Balance,
by Albert Gore, Jr.:
Insisting on the supremacy of the neocortex exacts a high price,
because the unnatural task of a disembodied mind is to somehow
ignore the intense psychic pain that comes from the constant
nagging awareness of what is missing: the experience of living in
one's body as a fully integrated physical and mental being. Life
confronts everyone with personal or circumstantial problems, of
course, and there are many varieties of psychic pain from which we
wish to escape. But the cleavage between mind and body, intellect
and nature, has created a kind of psychic pain at the very root of
the modern mind, making it harder for anyone who is suffering from
other psychological wounds to be healed.
